Noa submerges us in three post-apocalyptic versions of the world of the future, one of which is freely inspired by “Effondrement… c’était pour demain?”, a book adapted from Gabriel Salerno’s doctoral thesis. The novel theorises on the imminent collapse of our society, in part by drawing parallels to societies that have collapsed through history, with a view to the environmental and social decline which will only continue to worsen according to many. Noa starts with the premise of the novel and imagines the world of 2085 where humans failed to meet the carbon reduction targets set for 2050, and then he juxtaposes them to two other worlds that Stephen Hawking envisioned.
What do we mean by collapse? A once historical question, today the potential collapse of contemporary society is very real given the environmental and social degradations that continue to worsen. Looking upon both past and future allows us to seize the significance of the current breakdown and to carefully outline the likely contours of our collective future. The study offers a true guide to understanding what collapse entails.
