Center (CSEM)

Christophe Ballif is the director of the Photovoltaics and Thin Film Electronics Laboratory (PV-Lab) at the Institute of Microengineering (IMT) in Neuchâtel, part of EPFL since 2009. The lab focuses on high-efficiency solar cell technologies, including heterojunction crystalline cells, passivating contacts, multi-junction cells such as silicon-perovskite tandems, and advanced optical detectors. It also works on energy management, particularly solar power integration into the energy system, and has played a key role in technology transfer and industrialization with various companies.

Ballif graduated in physics from EPFL in 1994 and completed his Ph.D. there in 1998, focusing on new PV materials. He conducted postdoctoral research at NREL in the U.S. and worked at Fraunhofer ISE on crystalline silicon photovoltaics before becoming a full professor at the University of Neuchâtel in 2004.

Since 2013, Ballif has also led the CSEM Sustainable Energy Center in Neuchâtel, which focuses on the industrialization of solar energy technologies, including manufacturing processes, solar cell packaging, and energy storage. He has co-authored over 600 papers, holds multiple patents, and received the Becquerel Prize in 2016 for his work in high-efficiency photovoltaics.
